moviejunkie submitted this review of the new Soderbergh movie "Good Will Hunting Goes to Las Vegas."
Let us know what you think!
Throughout the past 6 months, heist films have been sporadically
arriving on the scene . 'The Score' starring Robert De Niro was one of
the first out the gate last July, while David Mamet's highly praised
'Heist' was just released last month. Now, the Holiday season plays
host to one of the most enjoyable films this year 'Good Will Hunting
Goes to Las Vegas'. Steven Soderbergh's latest opus is absolutely
fantastic. Not that Soderbergh hasn't included a couple of cliched
segments, but they hardly detract from the superbly acted, written,
and directed film. George Clooney stars as some guy, who having just
been released from prison, plans a $150 million heist that only Good
Will Hunting can help him pull off.
At first, given the setting, I was worried this was going to be a
rehash of 'Good Will Hunting Plays Poker,' and in fact, the action is a
little slow until Clooney and the newly recruited Brad Pitt get around to
bringing Good Will Hunting in on the action. But my worries were for
naught--Matt Damon is stunning in his most dramatic role since 'Good Will
Hunting Stalks Jude Law.' A bunch of other guys end up on the team, but
they are little more than bit-players compared to Damon and his two
co-stars.
Soderbergh returns to the smooth, slick style that he first
displayed in his earlier film, 'Out of Sight.' The pacing, dialogue,
and cinematography are even more developed here, displaying an
excellent level of polish. Especially noteworthy are the scenes that
develop the sexual tension between Tess Ocean, played by Julia
Roberts, and our hero, Good Will Hunting. The two characters ooze
repressed sensuality, and it's clear that even the tough-skinned Tess
can't resist GWH's boyish charms.
The training and execution of the heist are masterfully portrayed,
and you'll gasp more than once at the audacity of the plan. To say
much more would spoil the outcome. I'll just finish by saying that
this is Matt Damon's most enjoyable movie since 'Good Will Hunting is
a Psychotic Angel.' Run, don't walk to the theater to see it.
